What it is
The maltier, darker cousin of the Flanders red: caramel, raisin and toast carry a softer, mostly lactic sourness. Aging happens in tanks rather than oak, so there is no wood character and the fruit leans towards dried plum and fig. Fuller-bodied and rounder than its red sibling.
Flavor
Hops stay in the background: none of their character belongs.
Caramel, dark fruit and sweet/honey, with room for grainy, toasty, bready/biscuit or chocolate.
Fruity esters and tart, with room for clean or funk.
